Legonaut, the first Lego Astronaut
What qualifies for news these days? A murder, car accidents, or maybe even a couple teenagers setting a Lego figurine into space. That’s right, 2 17-year old Canadian boys Matthew Ho and Asad Muhammad spent less than $500 for a weekend project to send their Lego Astronaut about 80,000 feet in the air.
The high school kids spent about 4 months putting together their Balloon powered space craft which consisted of a home-made parachute, styrofoam, and on board were 4 cameras, a cell phone with a GPS app, and of course the Lego figurine holding up a Canadian flag.
The weekend of January 28, 2012, when the wind conditions were right, the teens set their helium inflated project into the air from a Soccer field in Newmarket. They watched it soar into the sky getting higher and higher and then eventually out of sight. After the Legonaut was out of visual distant the only way to track the space craft was through the GPS.
After nearly 65 minutes of flight time, the two boys tracked down their space craft about 75 miles away. A successful space travel which has landed safely containing 2 videos and 1,500 photos of the amazing Journey. You can check out the video below:
So, next time your bored or have a hankering for sending something in space, take some pointers from these amazing boys. They were both given acknowledgement by Canon and Lego. Good job guys!
